Sonny Prude Thinks Guns are Good at the Airport

Only in Georgia! AAAHH!!!

-Faisal

From today's USA Today's travel section.

Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue says he thinks it's a good idea to allow citizens to carry guns in the pre-security parts of Atlanta's airport, the world's busiest. "If my wife wanted to carry a gun, if she was walking from one of those far parking lots to pick up a grandchild or something like that, I think that's a good idea, yes," Perdue tells The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The governor's comments come on the heels of a state law that went into effect July 1.

That law "allows people who pass background checks to carry concealed weapons on public transportation, in state parks and in restaurants that serve alcohol," the Journal-Constitution writes. But on that same day, Atlanta airport officials declared the airport to be a "gun-free zone" and threatened to charge gun carriers with a misdemeanor. "Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin argued that allowing guns could endanger people because airports remain attractive targets for terrorism," The Associated Press writes.

With the conflicting opinions, AP says "a legal battle quickly erupted over whether the law applies to public areas of (Atlanta's airport) before travelers pass through security checkpoints. … Gun rights supporters filed a federal lawsuit challenging the designation, saying the airport qualifies as mass transportation and has restaurants that should be accessible under the new law." As for Perdue's comments, AP writes the governor "hasn't asked his legal counsel for guidance and was simply offering his own 'lay opinion' " on the subject. A hearing is set for Aug. 11, according to the Journal-Constitution.

Hmm... I definitely do not think there is a need for guns at the airport. I kind of have mixed feelings on the whole subject though, so I'm going to leave it at that.

I dont think so its a good idea to carry guns at the airport or somewhere else. We already have plenty of security at the airport. If that happens than it will be very dangerous for everyone and probably our state needs to deploy more police force at the airport for security.

It is the good-old-boy South, after all. Why not let everyone have guns, anywhere they want? Kids with AK-47s will help us win the next Civil War

I agree with Mayor Shirley Franklin...i think with the terrorism we have already had in the past why allow people to have guns now. To me this is crazy. I even like Perdue being i went to school with his kids in good ole Warner Robins, Georgia but i definately do not agree with this.
